When I first joined the marketing team for the Western Washington University Viking's Ice Hockey, I had no idea how much this experience would shape my skills, confidence, and passion for content creation. As an international student from Brazil and a marketing major, stepping into the fast-paced world of sports media was both exciting and challenging. Now, as I near the end of my time with the team and prepare for graduation, I can confidently say that working as an intern for the WWU hockey team has been one of the most valuable experiences of my college career.

Hockey isn’t just a sport—it’s an experience. The energy in the rink, the fast pace of the game, and the way the fans bring it every night make it something special. My job as a marketing intern was to capture all of that and turn it into content that would get people excited. I handled live game updates, took photos and videos, and created content for Instagram and TikTok. Whether it was filming highlights, or making social media posts, my goal was always to showcase the team’s passion and dedication in a way that resonated with our community.

One of the most rewarding aspects of this internship has been the hands-on learning. I wasn’t just sitting behind a desk—I was in the action, capturing moments in real-time and experimenting with different content strategies. I learned how to shoot and edit dynamic video clips, write engaging captions, and analyze audience engagement to optimize our social media reach. Each game and practice session became an opportunity to refine my creative skills and adapt to the fast-moving world of sports marketing.

Working closely with the players, coaches, and fellow marketing team members has allowed me to build meaningful connections within the WWU community. Seeing the impact of our content—whether it’s a game-day hype video that gets fans excited or a behind-the-scenes look at the team—has been incredibly fulfilling. The support and collaboration within the hockey community have made this experience not just a job but a passion project that I look forward to every week.
Beyond the creativity and excitement, this internship has equipped me with valuable professional skills. Managing content calendars, developing engagement strategies, and working under tight deadlines have all prepared me for a future in marketing. More importantly, it has reinforced my love for storytelling and digital media, making me even more excited to pursue a career where I can blend creativity with strategy.
Working as an intern for the Western Washington University Viking's Ice Hockey has been more than just a learning experience—it has been a journey of growth, creativity, and community. Whether it’s capturing the perfect game-winning goal or seeing our content bring fans together, every moment has been worth it. As I continue my path in marketing, I know that the lessons and memories from this internship will stay with me, shaping my future in ways I never imagined.
